So I received the email below from our child’s first grade teacher this morning, and I could not help but feel the need to comment on it as it seems relevant to business and anyone who manages one. Read the email below:
Snow days are not scheduled vacations. All homework should be completed on schedule. I rethought the sentence homework assignment and the students who turned in their sentences yesterday do not have to write any sentences this week. If you have already written the 3 sentences then you will just have to write 7 sentences next week. There should be a reward for the kids who did their work as scheduled.
Snow days are not vacation days. Some of us have the ability to work from home so there is no excuse. With email and the internet, should it really matter what the weather is outside? I know some of you have children, and it is difficult when school is cancelled. I know that some of you don’t like driving on ice and neither do I. Shouldn’t our work in business be completed on schedule? Isn’t that what being a professional is all about? Ask your employer to give you on-line access. Should there even be a reward for doing what is required? While we always want our employees to be safe and careful, ask yourself, are you using the snow day as a vacation day?
