We’ve heard of the “Nanny-cam” and the amazing things you find out when you hide a small camera in a teddy bear. As a new spin on this idea, why not put a voice recorder in your child’s toy so you can record your ex’s (or ex-to-be’s) conversations?
That’s just what an Omaha man is alleging his ex-wife did to him. William "Duke" Lewton, 36, and ex-wife Dianna Divingnzzo have a 5 yr-old daughter over whom they have spent the past 4 and a half years in a custody battle. Lewton and several acquaintances claim they were recorded by a recording device planted in Lewton’s young daughter’s teddy bear, and are suing Divingnzzo, her father and her former lawyer for allegedly recording conversations without their consent.
The Judge in the couple’s custody case reviewed notes between Divingnzzo and a court-appointed therapist which made reference to the recordings. The judge then informed both parties’ attorneys.
"[Divingnzzo] somehow found a way to get a bugging device and installed it in my daughter's teddy bear," Lewton has said. "Every time my daughter came to stay with me, I was being recorded.” Lewton did not personally see the bugging device, and has not yet heard the recordings. Lewton’s former father-in-law, whom Lewton is also suing, converted the conversations on CD and then transcribed them. The recordings allegedly contain hours of conversations over a period of about 6 months. Attorneys for Divingnzzo have acknowledged the recordings exist, but said it remained up to a jury to determine who bugged the bear and whether any crime had been committed.
